{pretty, happy, funny, real}

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

Every Thursday, here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!

 {pretty}

I had some beautiful red and yellow tomatoes from my farm box, and decided they needed to be made into a tart. Caramelized onions, feta cheese, tomatoes, and a rosemary-scented crust. I made it gluten- and dairy-free so we could share it with a friend who has allergies, and it turned out just delicious!

(In case you're interested in the details, I worked off of this recipe here. I used almond meal instead of sweet rice flour, and bacon fat as the shortening. I followed her suggestions to adjust the fat in the crust to account for not adding the cheese, though I'm sure it'd be delicious with the Parmesan if you weren't trying to avoid it! I did use cheese under the tomatoes because I have some delicious sheep's-milk feta that my friend can eat.)

{happy}

We have a closet in our downstairs hall that I affectionately refer to as "the cavernous closet." It's hard to take a picture that accurately represents just how big and deep it is, because you can't get far enough away from the doorway to get a good shot. But it's really more like a small room than a closet. I could imagine setting up a little home office in there, and being able to shut the door on it, chair and all.

It's so big that it very quickly became the place where we stowed anything we didn't have a spot for, or needed to deal with later, and it's so cavernous that things didn't get stowed in a very orderly manner.

I'm sorry to say that at some point in the last several months I gave up, and embraced to the organizational principle known as "open the door and literally throw the thing in."

What a mess!

A few weeks ago, though, I pulled a little bookshelf out of my neighbor's trash that I knew would help save my closet. The other day, the iron finally entered my soul, and I dragged every last thing out of that closet. Once I threw out what needed to be thrown out, filed the papers where they needed to go, and distributed everything to its rightful home, it turned out that not too much actually needs to live in the cavernous closet!

I get a little thrill of housewifely happiness and satisfaction now, every time I open the door.

(I've been opening it all the time, to get at my new vacuum, which I love! Talk about thrills of housewifely satisfaction... my floors are so clean!)

{funny}

Pippo likes to bring his daddy his slippers, which makes him a pretty Good Son, if you ask me.

He also likes to wear them.

In fact, he likes to jump in them! As you might imagine, this isn't always entirely successful.

{real}

I had a lot of motivation and momentum to finish a project this week and got myself almost there, but then was cruelly thwarted by circumstances beyond my control. Now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to find the part I need or how to work around my sewing machine's limitations.

It's not at all unusual that I end up leaving a project unfinished, but usually I'm the cause of my own delay. It's much more frustrating to set aside the time and be ready to go, but find you're not able to. Don't you think?
